Milngavie Primary School is a school where individuals are valued and supported to achieve their personal best.
Our ethos is one of high ambition and aspiration, valuing the unique potential of every young person as they journey through a challenging and fun curricular programme that leads to attainment for all. Our children are supported in becoming confident and independent young people, who thrive on personal challenge, and are motivated to learn.
The school’s ethos actively promotes participation of all through our pupil leadership activities, enabling our young people to exercise their voice in our school as responsible citizens. Overall, this approach ensures that we prepare out pupils for life and work after school by equipping them to embody the four capacities of curriculum for excellence as we strive to develop them as resilient and adaptable young people equipped with the skills they require for their further education, and later, in the workforce.
I am extremely proud to lead a team that is committed to children's well-being, achieving high standards and providing the very best opportunities for all in our care. Staff, supported by our Parent Council and PTA, work hard to deliver a rich and challenging curriculum; to prepare children for future education; and to help them acquire the skills and enthusiasm needed to embrace the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. This continues to be recognised beyond the school through the many external awards and accolades that celebrate our successes.
Our values are demonstrated in our nurturing, caring, supportive and friendly environment. Our children respond to this by being respectful of each other and well behaved both in and out with the school environment, something that is often commented positively on.
The excellent start begins in our Early Years Centre where staff providing a happy, supportive and purposeful environment, and a curriculum that excites and stimulates children’s imaginations and creative thinking.
Across our school campus the curriculum is constantly being adapted to provide the experiences and opportunities required in a modern, ever changing society, including ‘Big Questions’, to promote enquiry-led learning. We are also beginning to dip our toe into the world of AI!
As a school we have some particular strengths. Our specialisms in music, science and digital learning are representative of this. We strive to provide appropriate support and challenge across the school, and consequently we achieve exceptionally well against local authority and national comparative performance data.
Frequent trips and visits, community activities and a wide range of after-school clubs (which we are constantly looking to improve upon) further add to the opportunities available to children.
Now in my 7th year at Milngavie, and 21 as a Head Teacher, I look back on my time here knowing that we have brought about significant, positive change. On that journey we have faced some significant challenges, challenges which many staff would have struggled to overcome. However, the staff team at Milngavie have risen to every one of those challenges, prioritising the needs of the children on each and every occasion. I’m proud to both lead and work with the team, and look forward to our achieving yet more in my remaining time at the school.
