Douglas Cluster numeracy booklet

Music plays a vibrant and essential role in our school community. Every class enjoys a weekly music lesson led by our specialist music teacher, Mrs Ramsay, where pupils learn explore a wide variety of styles of music. In Primary 3 pupils have the opportunity to learn the recorder, and subsequently the tin whistle in Primary 4. Our senior choir rehearse weekly after school.

Our musical experiences extend beyond the classroom. Pupils regularly attend inspiring live performances, including concerts by the Royal National Scottish Orchestra and events at Celtic Connections. We are also thrilled to begin a brand-new partnership with the Milngavie Music Club, opening the door to many exciting future opportunities.

Our school is deeply connected to the wider community through music. The school choir frequently shares its talents by performing at Tesco and at the Oakburn Park Day Centre. The brass ensemble performs at local care homes and other local venues at Christmas.

We have a wonderful team of dedicated instrumental teachers from the Instrumental Music Service who offer lessons in strings, woodwind and brass from P5. Every year we come together for our Musical Evening, celebrating our musical talents in an evening of music making at Cairns Church.

Physical Education at Milngavie Primary 

As part of our Health and Wellbeing programme, all pupils participate in a full range of PE activities from ball skills and games to gymnastics, dance, fitness and athletics.  There are many opportunities to participate in extra-curricular events such as football tournaments, netball matches, cross country races and after-school clubs supported by our enthusiastic school staff and the local Active Schools team.

Science at MPS

At our school, we aim to develop curious, confident and enthusiastic scientists. From P1 to P7, children develop their knowledge and understanding across Planet Earth, Forces, Electricity and Waves, Biological Systems, Materials and Topical Science. Alongside scientific knowledge, there is a strong emphasis on developing skills for scientific investigation. 

Investigation is at the heart of our approach to science. Children learn to ask questions, make predictions, observe, measure, plan fair tests, identify variables, record and present results, recognise patterns, draw evidence-based conclusions and evaluate their investigations. These skills progress carefully from teacher-supported exploration in P1 to increasingly independent scientific enquiry by P7.

Assessment takes place naturally throughout learning. Evidence comes from discussion, observation, practical investigations, explanations and appropriate written or recorded work. Summative assessments may also be used at appropriate points to provide additional evidence of learning and identify strengths or areas for further development.

Our aim is for pupils to leave primary school with a strong foundation in science and the investigative skills and confidence to explore and understand the world around them.
